I was told that the reason is a tractor & trailer has much more tire contact area which is a dominating factor in a panic stop.
I was taught in my geezer 'safe driving' class to maintain at least a 3 second gap between you and the vehicle ahead of you, more in bad driving conditions. Hard to do but I am slowly training myself (old dogs CAN learn new tricks).
I also don't like following semi's on the highway. But I'm usually going slow enough for them to pass me.
