Winch Cable Question

I know this has been asked a thousand times. I actually saved the responses from before but it got deleted.
I know there are two sizes people use, specs says 7/16 came on the truck but what is the other size? Again, what are the reasons to using each size of cable? What is the weight capacity of each? Is it better to have the cable stronger than the winch and let the shear pin do its job? How many feet can you get on with each size.
Cable is expensive I want to make sure I get what I need. When looking are there any other factors I should be aware of other than size?
