I made a cable cleaner by taking two wire brushs, cutting the handles off, and screwing them to a block of plywood. You can walk the rope with this brush and a spray bottle of WD40 and get it pristine. Lots if WD40 or kerosene to wash the grit away. I stretch the rope with the pintle on another truck and raise the center with a trashcan. After letting it dry a bit I wipe the cable liberally with a quart of 30 weight.
