gen is not genning

started the truck yesterday (58 FF pw 230) and the amp guage was going nuts bouncing the hand back and forth at high speed wth?? took the cover off of the regulator and run some 320 wet or dri between the points to try to clean them, got back in and started the truck, doesn't charge, any! the guage will show a discharge like when the lights are on but revving the engine will not move the hand?? it's been so long since I worked on a generator that I have forgotten how to test to see whether its the gen or the regulator. someone pitch in here. Dave.
