Thank you for taking the time to respond.
First off, this is not my first MV or dodge MV nor is it my first WC12 1/2 ton varient.
I always knew they weren't NASCAR speed racers anyway.
I'm not looking to increase its speed. I'm very much able to get this truck to 50 - 52 mph and beyond and run with the traffic (at least on roads I take it on, never a highway)
It's just the slight hills I encounter where it can't get moving, or I loose momentum. Or if I start out onto a road and it's a grade from the start I just can't get this truck up to speed until I crest the first hill. And I mean it's not a real hill I'm talking. Just a slight grade.
So the reason I posted was after a weekend ride and feeling this lack of "umph" on a hill, and the realization that in another few years I'll be living in Colorado with REAL hill and true grades, what the heck am I gonna deal with there driving this truck??!!
I currently live in southeast Oklahoma. While it's not nearly as flat as Texas where we came from, there are hills. Much like New Hampshire as one poster noted.
I used to live in mass so I know New England terrain. Our here somewhat the same.
So my mind not being able to leave much alone, im thinking of possible ways to get more umph without a drastic power plant swap like a V8 or other.
Thinking the best and easiest would be either to rework the current motor to bore out and get more horses or simply get a larger flathead that directly bolts in.
I was thinking the 251. Or as dozermsn mentioned a 265?
I originally had a 251 in this truck when I bought it and would have kept it had the block not been cracked.
Either way, reworking the current or replacing with a larger motor still involves tearing it all down and I would like to do that before I leave oklahoma, if I'm gonna do it at all.
Or live with it as is... it's not horrible most times, it's just them inclines when I got my foot in the carb trying to get it to move where I start thinking this idea!!
I also understand the final hearing of 4:89. As it's a great gear for higher speeds we loose the torque the 5:38 of the 3/4 tons offer.
I also owned a few 3/4 ton ww2 trucks so now they felt more "peppy" off the line!
I suppose another option I have is go back to the 7:50-16 size tires. I'm running the 9:00-16 now.
I had both, on a previous wc12 and I can tell you the "pep" felt with the smaller tires was quite a difference over these larger 9:00-16.
But we all so much love our larger diameter tires don't we?!!!
Still if I go that route with the original sized tires I'll
Loose the top end speed to gain the "pep" back.
Anyone running the stock 7:50-16 on a wc12 to comment?
Wondering if I'll loose the 50-52mph I'm able to get now, to something so miserable like 45mph tops again
With the change to the smaller tire?
