Think of the driveline traveling to the rear axle as actually consisting of three drive shafts. The third one being the one that passes through the transfer case. I have gotten into the habit of keeping the input and rear output yokes on the transfer case in phase with one another as if they were at the ends of a drive shaft. I only have to do this after using low range, or after selecting the "false neutral" in the transfer and turning the input intermediate shaft during greasing.
It helps. I can tell withing a mile if I have forgotten to re-phase this third shaft.
