I had a lot of cooling issues with my carryall at first. I am running a 327 V8 which puts out more heat than your 4bt. I run a original radiator cap on the original radiator and core. I would over heat in higher temps and slow traffic. If I was moving above 25 mph I had no issues. I did not have a recovery tank to start with.
I was able to solve the issue with a couple of changes. The main issue was air flow as there is very little room in the carryall engine compartment. First was a recovery tank to catch fluid when it got hot. Second and third was reworking the fan and shroud. I bought a better flexible fan with a greater blade angle. I also moved the fan closer to the radiator. Most importantly, I put a fan shroud in. At first the shroud did not mane any difference. Then I read a bunch on fan’s and air flow. I had to redesign the shroud and the fans placement. For maximum air flow the shroud has to coVer the whole radiator and the hole has to be a specific size based on fan diameter. Additionally, the fan must be placed so that a certain percent of the fan blades are within the shroud. These two factors control air flow at the fan blade tips similar to winglets on airplane wings. I ended up reducing the hole diameter in the shroud and welded in a better lip around hole in the shroud. I also used spacers to position the fan so it’s blades are 1/3 into the shroud.
These simple changes solved all my problems. It has not overheated in years and it is no longer loosing fluid due to heating up.
