Looks like the cover gasket failed. It pulled itself inside the chamber. Never seen anything like that before. That gasket was also stud mounted so it had to pull off the studs. Then the oil leaked out, overheated and seized the pinion shaft. What actually failed to seize the pinion I don't know, its stuck in there so I can't really see anything.
