The gauge cannot be placed in "series" with other devices as it is not designed to support a load.
The electrical system is a common buss. No matter where the gauge is placed it will read the amount of current potential on the system.
The only solution would be to limit the current on the branch circuit feeding the Amp gauge. The best bet would be probably to have the gauge rebuilt proportionally so that say a 3 amps movement would result in a 1 unit deflection.
