I have this starter apart, its filthy inside and out, I'm trying to see how I'm supposed to clean up this mess. The manual calls for "dry-cleaning solvent" but "don't let it touch inside the motor".
Does anyone know what dry cleaning solvent is? And If I can't use that to clean the smuts out of the inside, what can I use to clean the inside? All I have is soap, water & gasoline. Gasoline works pretty good on most of this stuff. I'd be a bit nervous on something sparky like this.
And yes, the brushes were worn away 'till they were getting cockeyed in their slides. The commutator seems to be worn oval shaped. Half is shiny, the low spots are crispier looking. Its probably too far gone for a good rebuild but maybe I can piece it together enough to hold for the weekend. I have a set of brushes winging their way here as we sleep.
