Polish the points with very fine sand paper then magazine paper. the reg doesn't just cu on and off it basically rapidly floats the points to control amperage so they must be very smooth so they don't stick.
it should never jump to 50 unless battery totally dead and you just jumped it. then it should gradually come down. after starting with a charged battery normally you only see amps at 5 to 25 amps or so.
