Gas Tank Slow To Fill

Tried to fill my custom made 40 gallon tank today with stock WDX filler neck. Auto shut down of pump kept recurring as gas kept pushing back over the pump nozzle. After what seemed like an eternity(!0-!2 minutes) finally pumped about 25 gallons and decided to give up.
Any suggestions for remedying this problem would be appreciated.
