OT, but flathead Octane

My buddy Mike puts mid grade octane gas in his mower and 2 vintage Cub Cadet tractors ('69, 71), 'cause a B&S manual says so. So... why would a low compression flathead need a higher octane. I call him Cap'n Slappy for good reason!
Opinions? I say Regular is more than adequate.
