I won't go into how a differential works other than it lets the tires spin at different speeds while still transferring power, how is kind of cool, but we all know the limitations when traction is limited.
The "limited-slip" you hear about is a clutch that engages when there's too much slip between the right and left axle and locks them together. It's off until the right conditions trigger it.
The lock-rite operates backwards from that. The axles are locked together unless there's enough force to cause them to unlock. It's kind of an "off-road first" kind of setup. Most of us are not used to driving with locked axles so it can mess people up when you're expecting one behavior and get another.
The ARB is definitely the gold standard, as in they want plenty of gold for it! As I replied below the benefit is that it is open (just like your current axle) until YOU tell it not to be. Then it's completely locked until you tell it not to be.
