For perspective, all those guys grew up during the Depression. I think that's what gave them the attitude of "We have a job to do. Let's go over there and get it done." They'd grown up working hard at whatever they could get or whatever needed doing on the farm. They saw their parents work hard. And maybe most of all they saw their communities pull together during hard times, regardless of their politics or nationality. On the home front, housewives who had grown gardens and kept chickens during the Depression just to feed their families didn't have a problem re-naming them "victory gardens" to save the real farm produce for the war effort. Same with gas rationing and scrap metal drives. I'm not saying anyone thought it was a grand time. I'm just saying they were used to getting by with what they could get and working together to do what needed doing.
