Weird Ammeter Issue

I tested the electrical system on the 6x6 last night. Most everything checked out, but I noticed that the ammeter was indicting a charge when I put a load on the battery (engine not running). I assumed I had the wires reversed on the back, so today I switched them. But it's still reading a charge when I pull a load off the battery.

Any ideas what's going on?
