I like that patient method, but I guess my method is even simpler; I've always been able to convince myself that I could just cut it off short and leave it where it is. The only reason I could think I'd need to get it out right away is if I had to dig a foundation or pour a slab there. I knew a guy who had a big fir stump 4 or 5 feet across in the basement of his normal-looking suburban house. The builder had just built the house around the stump. He split good dry kindling off that stump for many years.
