I used a 55 Pontiac for pulling stumps this size using the following procedure. Note that this procedure will work on ANY tree from a sapling to a redwood.
This assumes that you have already cut the tree down and have a 4 ft stump or less sticking out of the ground.
Tools - garden hose and shovel
1. dig a hole as deep and as close as you can alongside the tree trunk. Don't worry if the starting hole is only a foot deep. It will still work.
2. With a sharp stream nozzle on the garden hose, blast away at the sides of the hole. The mud will run down to the bottom of the hole. (Just like hydrolic mining). Once the hole is full of mud and water, shut the water off.
3. Walk away and have a beer.
4. Come back (later or the next day) after the water has drained leaving the mud, Shovel out the mud from the hole and then start repeating steps 2 - 4.
5. Work your way around the trunk until you expose all of the support roots and can see daylight all around and under the root ball. The root ball will slowly become exposed enough to saw the main support roots as you go. After this, the root ball will literally drop to the bottom of the hole. Then you can use your winch to pull it out. No problems.
Some of the larger trees have taken 15 minutes a day for a couple of weeks to drop the root ball to the bottom of the hole. Depending on temperature, step 3 may need to be repeated throughout the process.
Best of Luck
