Actually, when installed properly in a jeep, the axle must be rotated so that the rear pinion is directly inline with the driveshaft. For a shaft with ujoints on each end, the shafts should be within 5 degrees of parallel. For a shaft with a cv joint on one end, the u-joint input/output, must be within 5 degrees of parallel with the shaft. The angular requirements are differnt for both types of joint, so you cannot just substitute one for the other. A u-jont, operating at an angle, does not rotate at a constant speed. For this reason, we "phase" two ujoints so that the input and output of a shaft rotate at the same speed. A cv joint is just that, it spins at a constant velocity. When paired with a u-joint, the u-joint must be in-line with the shaft in order to avoid any vibration.
