Hey All,
I get where you are coming from especially the safety part. In my original post I said I drove a JK Jeep and for those not familiar with Jeep models a JK is a post 2007 (IIRC) 4x4 wrangler jeep. Mine is a 2010 6 speed manual. Wranglers are short wheelbase high center of gravity jeeps you can take the top off - doors too if you want. The jeep literature on the visor says to not count on the top or doors to keep you in or safe in a crash. I drive it every day. I think I have already made decisions about some of what you have suggested. In addition I have a solid 50 years experience 4x4in not just as a weekend warrior but as a part of my career although I'm in heli's more than 4x4 now as a part of my job. I'm not new to this.
With respect to cost of this kind of thing I can fix-up my truck to a safe good looking driver well under 10k or so. I'm not looking for showroom quality. I'd spend more to get to a flat fender but not the kind of money those beautiful legacy trucks go for. I'm not looking for a quote just how doable. Are there any major pitfalls or is it just not feasible unless you want to spend 10s of thousands. I'm thinkin like the post above me I better start lookin for some of the pieces if feasible. Fortunately I have family in Texas, Colorado, Montana, Oregon that I can definitely count on and I am in British Columbia and spent a lot of time in Alberta (dual citizen).
Anyway I hope a few of you have opinions on doing this kind of thing.
