Ok auto electrical smart folks answer me this

If you have a short in your electrical system , one that does not blow a fuse, at least not right away,
(1) what does the alternator do?
(2) what would you see on your in dash volt meter

I am attempting to trace down an issue and your answers would help me with areas to look. I have an idea of what I need to replace but do not want to bias anyone by loading the question.

google is not helpful- it just rearranges the question and addresses alternator faults and issues.
