Dually question

Hey all,
My old 47 is a 1-ton dually. Can a guy remove the outer rear wheels and safely drive it that way? I'm thinkin it would be less wear and tear (2 tires on the ground instead of 4). And, if I did should I leave the back wheels close to the drum or turn them around so they set away from the drum ( like the outside wheels do)? Thanks for any input.
