Was done back in the day to stop piston slap, rather than bore and fit O/S pistons - a cheap fix that was good for a while. The knurling tool raises the worn area of the piston skirt so the piston becomes a firm fit, motor runs nice afterwards, but it's an unknown because the raised areas wear quicker than a "normal" piston.
