And any competent gas station mechanic could overhaul an engine (although I have to say the one who did the 455 in my dad's '69 Oldsmobile wasn't a master craftsman). Nowadays, engines are a replacement item. Nobody goes inside them any more except for fun. Of course a factory engine is typically good for 200-300K miles rather than 40K miles too.
Given that short blocks and long blocks aren't an option for 7U D4 cat pony motors, I'm going to try #5, or maybe #6 if I can do the knurling myself. Pistons are currently knurled, but very little left of the knurling.
