Opinions on DIY Wiring

I'm getting ready to start wiring the 6x6 Power Wagon - 12v, remote battery, 318, possibly aftermarket gauges, Gama Goat tail lights, etc. It seems like a custom wiring harness is going to be crazy expensive to have made, but electric is not my strong suit. If I can find a generic kit to build on I can probably do the work myself. What have you guys used that you like? I'm not going to have power windows or extra lighting, just the basics.
