Norm...The 300 six is probably Id say about 2. inches or so longer than the 258 AMC six. If I remember right, not all 300 six engines have fiber timing gears..I think pretty much the newer ones did tho. I have yet to have a timing gear go out in a 300. Yes the 300 is much better than that worthless boatanchor 302 slug. UggH! Ive run a few 302s in trucks and vans and they are even more useless than a Chebbie 305.
Norm..wanna know how to make a Killer toque monster from a Jeep Six cyl? Well the 4.0 Jeep engine is pretty much the same as the 232 and 258 sixes, BUT it has a shorter stroke and a much wider bore. Thats why they can rev so darn hi....Well anyhow the 258 has quite a long stroke...Well all 3 engines are in the same basic family group. And, if you take the crank and rods from the 258 and put them into a 4.0 block, you get something in the neighborhood of 288 CI. It has been done many a time with a minimum of machine work as well. And with a aftermarket EFI, and good exhaust, they are killer engines!
