The old timers that taught me the trick of revving up as you shut down said the point was to clear out the "burnt fuel by products" (i.e. water) from the cyls so they wouldn't freeze the rings to the walls. But have you noticed how new cars w/ computer controlled injection systems don't wear cylinders and rings out- they last 200,000 miles ?
I feel it's because the computerized 'choke' doesn't wash the walls w/ gas at startup (or shutdown), so the rings are always lubed. I'd go easy on the choke.
