The OD tranny would be a plus but I think it is the same dimension as the 727. Most of these had real long tail shafts and may not fit. You may need to locate a short shaft 727. If I towed I would also go with the 440.
Would more people respond to the 251 question? I think I am going to put a 265 crank and rod set in mine. What about cam grinds, head milling (how much), dual exhaust, aluminum heads? Have others done this?
