A number of years back I wanted a set of 20" wheels and tires
for my m37 and W300M. I knew 10.00x20s were too big
I had seen a set on a 3/4 carry-all and they rubbed the body and fenders.
I settled on 900x20 because they were easy to find & inexpensive. My
buddy needed aset for his m37 so I located a set of one piece pressed
wheels off of an old sugar beet harvester. We cut the centers out and without a
lath that big, cut out centers from old Ford model AA truck wheels and Dodge
centers and welded them in. These didn't turn out too true and my friend only used them
for slow speed off road. The second set I took the 2 1/2 ton wheels and cut the whole bunt center
out close to the riveted section leaving it in the rim. This gave a true centering ring left in the rim.
I took 1/2" plate, cut out a circle blank to drop in from the formerly concave side of the wheel. Welded that in and using a
magnetic drill put the bolt holes in after careful
plotting for position. These proved straight enough for highway travel without the use of a lath
We only encountered body rubbing at the rear of the front fenders, but
not enough to cause any damage or trouble. They didn't work on the Power Wagon but did on the M37 without any lift. If you were careful the axles lasted. The only one lost
was due to his kid hot dogging in tough conditions. I later got a set of LAV tires from Rob Sexton
when they first became available after Desert Storm. If I had the
11.00x20s earlier I never would have gone to the trouble of the 900x20s. Along with the clearance and
traction the Michelons best of all give a nice ride. Happy Trails, Lyle
