To filter or not to fiter that is the question??

For 20+ yrs I ran a 230 with no oil filter. From most of what I have read here about how this filter works, it sounds like excess bagage. The reason I ask, is I just put a new engine in, with an oil filter and it leaks, for no apparent reason. Im the kind of guy that would rather eliminate vestigual organs than fool with them. Don't worry, I'm not a surgeon.
