Any cures or do I go to a newer model? I am running the older style Corvette 1.25 or 1.375 master cylinder in my Carryall. In 400 miles I have had to top it up twice and the paint is ruined on everything under the unit. i have the same issue in my trash truck. Yes the truck has been off road. This issue seems to be common. I can do the following but want to know if there is a better way.
(1) toss out the unit and go for a later model with the plastic reservoir and screw top.
(2) drain the reservoir, file the top edge smooth where the seal contacts the edge
(3) double up on the gasket at the top.
(4) I read where people have run a bead of silicone around the top edge but this is not a direction I am willing to go.
So what have others done? Running the fluid at a low level is kind of counter intuitive - i like to have the reservoir about .375 to .25 filled from the top. 1.25 is where my front one is and my rear is over .5 from the top. Not fun. My 700 dollar steering gear is now getting rusty.
thanks
Bruce
