I recommend that you keep the winch clutch un-engaged to prevent any accidents. If for some reason the lever on the hydraulic valve got pulled/pushed, nothing will happen on the winch end except the motor turn as the winch is not engaged. If you run with the winch clutch engaged and accidentally move the hydraulic control valve the winch will immediatelly start to wind or un-wind...not good.
