Cummins 4bt hard to start when hot ????

Fires up fine when cold. Fires up fine when hot if I shut it off and hit the starter. But if I have been running it for about 1/2 an hour, have it fully warmed up and park the truck for about 10 minutes the truck does not want to run. It will fire, go vroom and promptly die. I got out and wiggled the hand pump leaver on the lift pump and the truck ran fine. So where do I look? Diesels are a whole new world for me.
VE pump, stock lift pump, just put 100 miles on the block after sitting for 6 years - no blow by.
