I don't know for sure that #2 stove oil is the same as #2 diesel, but in most rural areas stations sell dyed (untaxed) #2 diesel as "off-road diesel" or "ag diesel". Nowadays they also call it "high-sulfur diesel" due to the fact that highway diesel has to be low sulfer per EPA. It's usually about $.40/gal cheaper. The other reason to use it is that the injector pumps on old engines wear fast if low-sulfur diesel is used. I've used stove oil in my M35 with no problem, but it has 3 big fuel filters.
