/6 heat riser

On the heat riser on a slant 6, which position supplies heat to the carb? Mine's got the spring on it and the shaft moves, but it came with a wire tying it up and I'm not sure which way it wants to be for no heat (running mode). I'll fix it properly later, along with a leaking gasket, but for now I just want to be able to set it manually and get it in the right position for cold-weather starting and for highway running.
