They call them "universal joints" or "U" for short. Since they work so cool on a tractor PTO right out there in the open, we assume that it's always the case. NOT.
I paid the price on a lifted Wrangler when I failed to install pinion wedges on the spring mounts. Those vibrations you mentioned ate up my dif.
The closer to a straight shot you made from tranny to transfer case, the less likely a parts failure.
