'Took the M37 up to the local courthouse for a Labor Day car show and parked on one side, proping up the hood...then I walked around the sidewalk to see the trailer queens. When I got back, two fellows were standing in front on the M37 saying "you've got a motor running down there--is it an electric fuel pump that won't shut off?"
I had no answer and could not locate the source of the humm in the bright sun.

I quickly turned off the battery disconnect and it stopped. When I got back to my garage at home, I switched off the ignition and found that the pully on the generator was spinning inside the slightly loose fan belt. It's all stock 24v original military wiring, two 12v's hooked up in series.

So I pulled the battery disconnect and it stopped spinning. I waited a couple of hours for the engine to cool and went back and connected the batteries. It remained silent.
So, not taking any chances, I disconnected the bats again and then took my fingers and turned the generator pulley, slipping inside the not so tight belt.

Why would this big generator run like an electrical motor while the engine compartment was hot, but not do it when it cooled? There was ground rubber powder from the scuffed belt close by.
