AC Vacuum Pump Idea

I have a question and since this forum is full of people good at tinkering and coming up with something that works out of a pile of parts let me shoot a question.

This fall and early spring I plan on redoing the AC in my Dodge Charger and my old Dodge Truck. I'd like to pull a vacuum on the AC system to check for leaks and I heard its better to put a vacuum in the system before recharging with 134. My 2 options are to pay 60$ for a cheesy vacuum pump at the store or about 500$ for a professional vacuum system for AC. What about using an old Chrysler AC compressor with motor and use it to pull vacuum? Would this setup be good enough to pull vacuum on an AC system? I got an electric motor and an old AC Compressor laying around. I figure with some plumbing it could be hooked up pretty ez. I remember in high school shop the teacher built a small air compressor with this idea. I just want to reverse it. Thoughts?Ideas?Good?Bad?Wont work? I'm crazy?
