In a discussion below regarding the WC-12 1/2-ton truck, a couple of people mentioned that some of the parts break. Would this by any chance include the steering pitman arm?
I bought a WC 1/2-ton pitman arm for my '49 flatfender 1-ton Power Wagon from Vintage Power Wagons, since there don't seem to be any new or NOS ones available for my truck. It fits the sector shaft coming out of the steering box, but it's noticeably lighter duty (i.e., smaller dimensions in some areas). My old pitman arm is not all that bad, but I was concerned about some deep gouges that might eventually turn into cracks in the splines, so I thought I'd go ahead and replace it while I had it off.
I will probably spend 80-90% of my driving time on the road, and the rest off road, so it's not as severe of service as many trucks.
I'm sure VPW would not sell these as replacements for the 1-ton PW pitman arms if they had heard of any problems, but I suspect that majority of customers don't put many miles on their Power Wagons each year. I, on the other hand, plan to drive mine nearly every day, so I want to make sure it's as safe as possible.
Does anyone here know of any particular weakness with the WC 1/2-ton pitman arm?
Thanks,
Matt
