Converting to a NP 420 would be faily simple as long as the transmission came out of a later PW (Flat fender). The only other changes would be the bell housing from the later PW would be needed as well as the center floor pan hump and either the left or right side floor pan. If you have a winch you would need to find a PTO that fits the NP 420.

There are a lot of possible transmission swaps but they would require a lot more effort and $$. Overdrive transmissions would be great except that there is not enough room between the engine and the divorced transfer case. A married transfer case may be an option but a lot of work would be required to make it fit.
