I used my 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system for 8 years. I have no idea of how long it was used like this before I bought the truck. 13 years ago I switched the truck back to 6 volts and have had no problems whatsoever in using the same starter the whole time. Switching back to 6 volt also cured a lot of charging and ignition problems I had while running 12 volts. I was using a 12 volt generator, not an alternator.
