I have taken apart sone old gearboxes both trans and transfer case and i have always been amazed by the lack of wear on the gear teeth. I have seen plenty of rust damage from sitting with a little water in the box. Anything that would stick to the gears better and protect them from rust seems like the best idea. I am pretty certain the only reason for really thin gear lubes in newer stuff is fuel economy. I guess what i am saying is as long as there is lubricant in a transfer case and it doesnt sit for a long time in a wet environment they they will probably outlast everything else.
