A CDL is required for driving a commercial truck over 26000 lbs. this is federal. States can modify to some extent. Look at this link. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commercial_driver%27s_license
It sounds as if you can drive a semi above 26000 lbs if it is not used for commercial purposes.
