The distortion of the ring and problems related to that make sense. I have done that before on a smaller scale with snap rings and such that do not hold after twisting them out too far.
As far as the local fella goes, I heard that he tried using an impact to buzz out the lugnuts holding the rim on when the tire let go -- I have always been more of a hand tool person when it comes to removing the larger wheel nuts. If only he had let some of the pressure out. . . was a good/younger guy too about my age which is probably why it hits closer to home. I am not trying to be scared of the rims, I just want to be smart about what I am working with.
