I should clarify that the damage I am talking about is done during removal of the ring. If you pry to hard to remove the ring, you bend it too far out of round and it will never seat properly again.

It's possible this may have been a contributing factor in the death of the local guy. If you tried to inflate a ring that was distorted to the point it wouldn't seat properly, it would be a lot more likely to blow. You can tell by the size of the gap between the ring ends. It should be the same as it is now.

Even if you decide to have a tire shop mount and balance the tires, you may want to disassemble yourself for blasting and painting. After breaking the tire bead with a tire hammer or slide hammer, you pry a little bit at a time using the slotted holes designed for this purpose. Pry just enough to free the ring. Mind the gap!
