In George's defense... I am pretty sure the brakes on my last trailer only activated with the trailer going forward. I honestly have no idia if my new trailer's brakes will work while backing,, will have to find out some time. I can see that backing 17000 lb down a grade with only the tow vehicles brakes would be a very bad thing...
on the otherhand, if towing less than 10000lb, and not backing down mountains, the electric brakes are well up to the task, and far more cost effective than the other altenatives. "surge brakes" are available, but i have never used them,as i understand they only activate when the trailer is "pushing" the tow rig,, and do not believe they would work in the backing down a grade scenerio...
