No particular reason. Why am I putting a Perkins into the Carryall? Because I've owned the engine since '75, it was my first diesel. It is freshly overhauled with turbo pistons, rods, rings, new head, oil cooling jets for pistons. It has a Chevy pattern bellhousing and flywheel which fits my NP540 which has been attached to it for a quarter century so far.
It certainly will have enough torque with 4.89s, 37X12.5R16.5 Michelins and a 0.82 overdrive. Based on past performance in a FJ45, it would do fine even without the turbo because the gearing tires are equivalent to 31s with 4.11s which had lots of power in 5th in the FJ45, which wasn't much lighter than the Carryall.
But if I ever do another diesel swap (I really have too many rigs already) I will use an Eaton 6 or 9 spd if I use one of these industrial type 2500-2800 rpm motors.
Looking at the motor sitting in the chassis with the front clip off I can categorically say there is not room for a big six. It really occupies the space between the frame rails. It has 1.5" clearance with the firewall and the fan will clear the radiator by about 2".
A 6AT3.4 Cummins might barely fit but it would be really tight. Maybe in a WM300, does it have 33" radiator to firewall? The 6AT3.4 is about 32" front of 3 groove pulley to back of block.
