I think people assume anything with flat fenders and looks kinda military is a Jeep. I once watched a show about military trucks, therin they described how GP (short for general purpose) got slurred into Jeep. All of the small Jeep type vehicles no matter who built it was referred to as a Jeep. They also went on to describe the larger trucks such as the Dodges and GMs and how the GIs called them Beeps, short for Big Jeeps. I don't know how accurate this is, but it sounds reasonable to me.
