I've got a 4BT in a '53 M37. I'm running with the stock transmission and a Ranger OD (fits between the Chevy bellhousing on the Cummins and the tansmission. Truck has 4.89 gears, Lockrites front and rear, and 900x16 Grip Spurs.
I keep up with traffic on the interstate and idle over stuff off road.
Marine blocks are configured differently (oil pan, exhaust, flywheel, harmonic balancer, etc.) so you might be better off money wise looking for an automotive or industrial block.
I'm not the only one with a 4BT in a M37, and I know a bunch of folks who are runing Hercules and Perkins power with bassically the same size/power as my engine.
One question to ask if how much power do you need? I heard from one person when I was setting up my truck that a buddy of his was very concerned about my lack of power. I believe that his buddy had driven large trucks for a living and had put a 6BT into a M37. Being used to a lot of power in the big trucks and in his rig, he felt I might be dissapointed in my conversion. I'm happy.
Email me if you have any specific questions about my setup or want to know what I'd do differently if I was starting over.
