Your statement that the guys in pittsburgh diesel didn't think the 4BT would have enough power with lower gears, puzzles me.
Any eng. or electrical motor has more power using lower gears.Its higher or taller gears that cause any eng. or motor to loose power.
The larger the number, the lower the gear ratio and vise-versa.
The 6B is very heavy on the axle of a WDX-WM300 and really too big just as a big block gas burner would be even though folks have done it.Add a gin pole to the front and your really taxing the springs,frame, and axle king pins.
Reconsider the diesel, I prefer plenty of working room under the hood myself,so I suggest an in-line engine if possible. Besides, how much hp does a PW need anyway? They worked for decades using only a flathead-6 and did many mighty deeds.
